Film directed in 1976 by Alan J. Pakula, and starring Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Robards, Martin Balsam, Hal Holbrook, Jack Warden, Jane Alexander, Ned Beatty, Stephen Collins, Penny Fuller, Robert Walden, Lindsay Crouse, Meredith Baxter…
Synopsis: In the run-up to the 1972 elections, Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward covers what seems to be a minor break-in at the Democratic Party National headquarters. He is surprised to find top lawyers already on the defense case, and the discovery of names and addresses of Republican fund organizers on the accused further arouses his suspicions. The editor of the Post is prepared to run with the story and assigns Woodward and Carl Bernstein to it. They find the trail leading higher and higher in the Republican Party, and eventually into the White House itself.
Review: This could be the best political thriller ever made. The account follows the painstaking search for the truth behind the Watergate scandal and the efforts of two relentless journalists, Bernstein and Woodwards, to uncover the mystery.
Very exciting from the first to the last frame, and in my opinion both Hoffmann and Redford do their best work on this film. The supporting cast is exceptionally good, including such solid actors as Martin Balsam, Jason Robards (he’s fantastic!) And Jack Warden. The movie is hands down the best work of acclaimed director Alan J. Pakula! You can watch this fabulous movie over and over again.
