The Revengers – 1972 – English
Film directed in 1972 by Daniel Mann, and starring William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Woody Strode, Susan Hayward, Jorge Luke, Roger Hanin, Warren Vanders…
Synopsis: The life of the peaceful rancher John Benedict (William Holden) is broken when his family is massacred by a band of marauding outlaws and his farm is destroyed. Assemble a team of evil and lawless convicts to act as your gang as you go after the gang responsible for the deaths of your loved ones.
Review: William Holden, my candidate for the perfect American born lead with a number of hit movies like Sunset Blvd, Golden Boy, Love Is A Many Splendored Thing, Picnic, Bridges of Toko Ri, The Bridge On The River Kwai, The Horse Soldiers, Suzie Wong, made this movie at the end of her legendary career.
Directed by Daniel Mann, the movie was shot in Mexico and some of the scenes and photographs seemed a bit murky to me, but it could have been the impression I saw. Launched by Cinema Center Films, which tried to become a major studio, the action is fast-paced. The film features three Oscar winners, Holden, Ernest Borgnine and a small cameo Susan Hayward. The producers should have expanded the role that Ms. Hayward played. After all, the tough lady we all know and love would have been part of the gang.
